"Musical ability is not an inborn talent but an ability which can be developed. Any child who is properly trained can develop musical ability just as all children develop the ability to speak their mother tongue. The potential of every child is unlimited". - Dr. Suzuki
I would describe myself as kind, friendly, and patient; and when it comes to teaching, I am always very enthusiastic and also interactive.
I like my students to feel comfortable about where their skill levels currently are, and I would set goals with them together, and help them to reach their goals as soon as we can, without feeling too rushed. For me, it is very important for students to enjoy the process of improving as much as when they reach their goals.
For beginners, I would make sure I have the fundamentals covered and enforced at the beginning, so they don't have to spend extra efforts conquering bad habits later on; for more experienced students, I would make sure that other than learning new repertoires, reinforcing the fundamentals is also an essential step; for example, I enforce students to do scales and arpeggios as part of their practicing routine. Furthermore, I make sure every student understand the art of practicing at early stages of their learning, and that quality is almost always more important than quantity.
As for repertoire selections, I prepare my recommendations and I would let students know how I made the choices. However, it is always negotiable and I am always pleased when students tell me what they would like to play as well.
