As a trombone player/teacher, I believe that a new student must learn good technique as early as possible to avoid bad habits. This covers everything from good posture and slide technique to embouchure development and breath control, tonguing and flexibility. I develop a daily routine with all students used to touch on all of these areas.
No student is going to practice mindless exercises for very long, so I feel it important to make music every single time the horn is played. As well as playing repertoire (suited to the level of the student) and duets with me to keep things fun. I want the student to enjoy their lessons, making them want to practice and improve on their own.
